Problem Based Learning 01 - Part 03

Now that you have a good idea of what a good piece of news is like, create one of your own newscast based on the NTU Stabbing incident. By comparing with as many different sources as you can, you are to report from your own perspective on what could have happened ensuring that your reporting is as unbiased as possible.

Requirements:

1. You need to create a less than 10 minute newscast using the equipment in the Pulse Studio only.

2. You will need to include the following portions in your newscast:
a. A brief summary of what happened…
b. Explain the possible reasons why would a student want to stab his professor…
c. A discussion with an “expert” on one of the reasons why a student would want to stab his professor…
d. An interview with student/s on their views on this story…
e. A conclusion on what are the possible steps students should take when they face similar situations.

Please remember that a good newscast needs to satisfy the following requirements:

1. Journalists should have a neutral point of view, not taking a stand on any issues on which there is some disagreement. Instead, journalists are simply to report "both sides" of an issue.
2. It should mean reporting things without bias.
3. They need to be fair and accurate.

Student have abit of coflicts with teacher because teacher cirtisize her, The student was a very easy influences girl, she love vilonaces and she will be in the team when her friends have some vilonces attack, Teachers dont have the rights to critisize students as they will get provoted by them, This shows that teachers are also in fault and have to change so does a student do. >Caiyin<

  4. http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/emotions/stress.htmlGood Stress and Bad Stress
The stress response (also called the fight or flight response) is critical during emergency situations, such as when a driver has to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. It can also be activated in a milder form at a time when the pressure's on but there's no actual danger — like stepping up to take the foul shot that could win the game, getting ready to go to a big dance, or sitting down for a final exam. A little of this stress can help keep you on your toes, ready to rise to a challenge. And the nervous system quickly returns to its normal state, standing by to respond again when needed.

But stress doesn't always happen in response to things that are immediate or that are over quickly. Ongoing or long-term events, like coping with a divorce or moving to a new neighborhood or school, can cause stress, too.

Long-term stressful situations can produce a lasting, low-level stress that's hard on people. The nervous system senses continued pressure and may remain slightly activated and continue to pump out extra stress hormones over an extended period. This can wear out the body's reserves, leave a person feeling depleted or overwhelmed, weaken the body's immune system, and cause other problems.

Sixty-year-old Bohuslav Sibl, described as a strict but well-respected and talented teacher, died after being stabbed four times by his student, who cannot be named for legal reasons. The attack took place after Mr Sibl asked the boy to change seats. Enraged, he turned on his teacher and started beating him as the rest of the class looked on. Then he drew a knife and stabbed him before kicking him as he lay dying. An ambulance was called, but Mr Sibl was dead on arrival in hospital.

  6. I thnk the student cannot hit the teacher becuse the teacher also never do anything wrong about the game.

The grainy cell-phone video of a student hitting Baltimore art teacher Jolita Berry in her classroom, replayed in the national news and on the Internet, has reinforced the wide concern among school safety experts that teachers often don't receive enough training in how to defuse potentially dangerous confrontations with students. Berry's case has angered local officials, who said they would hold a meeting to try to find ways to give teachers skills to deal with disruptive students.
Baltimore schools offer classes on how to deal with such situations, but they are voluntary and are only available to a small number of teachers. Those who study school violence say that kind of instruction is crucial. "An essential part of new-teacher training has to be about how to de-escalate conflict," said Jane Sundius at the Open Society Institute, a nonprofit that has studied school suspensions and funded programs to improve student behavior.

    THE STORY

    Other Country Stabbed news
    = Loner

A loner who loved to play violent computer games stabbed to death a nurse while she had a cigarette break, the Old Bailey was told yesterday.
Stuart Harling, 19, acted out his murderous fantasy when he launched a "frenzied" attack on Cheryl Moss, an assistant nurse, stabbing her more than 70 times, the jury was told.

He crept up on her in the car park of an east London hospital stabbing and slashing her in the head, face, neck and chest.
Mrs Moss, 33, was defenceless and had no chance to scream for help, the prosecution said.
After striking, the killer fled and her body was found face down on a path by a person walking a dog near St George's Hospital, Hornchurch, on April 6 last year.
Harling, a trainee accountant, of Rainham, Essex, later admitted that he had killed Mrs Moss.
However, he claimed that he suffered from Asperger's syndrome - a form of autism - and was mentally ill at the time suffering from a schizoid disorder, the court heard.
Brian Altman, prosecuting, said Harling was simply a "cold blooded killer" who was acting out his fantasies.
Harling played computer games, some of them violent, and surfed the net, visiting websites devoted to serial killers, murder, knives, racism and pornography, he said. However, the killing was not a spontaneous act.
Mr Altman said Harling developed a plan to murder someone, which he performed in a chilling manner. "Cheryl Moss just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.
"Mrs Moss was found to be lying face down on a path not very far from St George's Hospital.
"Mrs Moss had been brutally stabbed to death, her killer having inflicted 70 stab and slash wounds, including to the top and back of her skull, face, back of the neck and back and chest.
"She had no time to flee and was unable to defend herself. She appeared to have no time to scream. The killer fled as quickly as he arrived."
After the attack police found a list of items needed for the murder, including a condom.
The murder kit was found stashed under a tree close to where the nurse was killed.
Mr Altman's opening speech to the jury was interrupted by Harling's outbursts from the dock.
He swore and made violent threats to Mr Altman.
He later had to be led down to the cells after he started throwing things.
Harling denies one count of murder. The case continues.

    The website is:http://www.sharpbrains.com/blog/2006/10/22/is-there-such-thing-as-good-stress/

Comments:Stress is an unavoidable consequence of life. As Hans Selye (who coined the term as it is currently used) noted, “Without stress, there would be no life”. However, just as distress can cause disease, it seems plausible that there are good stresses that promote wellness. Stress is not always necessarily harmful. Winning a race or election can be just stressful as losing, or more so, but may trigger very different biological responses. Increased stress results in increased productivity — up to a point. However, this level differs for each of us. It’s very much like the stress on a violin string. Not enough produces a dull, raspy sound. Too much tension makes a shrill, annoying noise or snaps the string. However, just the right degree can create a magnificent tone. Similarly, we all need to find the proper level of stress that allows us to perform optimally and make melodious music as we go through life.

  15. The worst time I was bullied was when I was in 4th-5th grade. There was this girl named Chasity who was really mean. For a while she would be my friend and let me hang out with her and then she'll suddenly turn on me and then be my friend again. She once followed me home from school poking a stick into my back and telling me to walk faster. There were other things she did as well but it would be to lengthy to discuss here.
Also in the summer it seemed that all of the neighborhood kids would turn against me. I remember going to one of my "friends" homes and all of the kids were there playing and all of a sudden they ran into the garage as soon as they saw me and shut the door. I asked if I could come in and Courtney one of the girls that lived there came out and gave me a cracker. Well unbeknowest to me there was a jalapeno pepper slice between them and she laughed as I ate it. She went back into the garage and I found this hose in her neighbor's yard and drank some water from it. I found her standing before me and with a sneer on her face she said I wasn't in the club. I had no idea what the hell she was talking about.

That's only a smidgen of the hell I went through as a kid.

Anyone ever find that being in a classroom at certains times is stressful. Such as having a subsitute or when it gets noisy? How about when you have to work in groups?! I hated that so much, I would make some excuse to leave, such as going to the bathroom and sitting there for the whole period or going to the library.

  20. SINGAPORE: The parents of an NTU undergraduate, who fell to his death after stabbing his professor in the university campus, has identified his body at the Singapore General Hospital mortuary.

They flew in from Jakarta on Monday evening after the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) authorities notified them of the tragedy, which stunned students returning to the campus on the first day after a one-week break.

David Widjaja's parents and his elder brother were accompanied by NTU counsellors and officials from the Indonesian Embassy here.

An NTU spokesman said they are still deciding whether to bring the body back to Jakarta or to cremate him in Singapore.

The spokesman said the university is providing them with "all the necessary assistance".

Meanwhile, Professor Chan Kap Luk is recovering at the National University Hospital after undergoing an emergency operation on Monday to stitch up wounds on his back.

A finger on his right hand was also placed in a splint. He is expected to be discharged in a few days.

  23. A teacher whose hair was ripped out by a nine-year-old student felt worthless and depressed and could not sleep after the attack, a Sydney court has heard.

Margaretta Slingsby, 58, is suing the NSW Education Department for negligence over the assault at Lismore Heights Public School in the state's north in May 2005.

Ms Slingsby claims she was left unable to teach and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after the student - who cannot be identified for legal reasons - kicked and scratched her, and pulled hair from her head.

"I could feel my hair being ripped out of my scalp," she previously told the NSW District Court.

The court heard the school's principal made an announcement to teachers about the student's arrival but said he did not have the boy's files from previous schools.

Giving evidence today, Ms Slingsby said she was never told anything about the boy or his "propensities".

About two months before the attack, she took time off work after the boy called her "f---ing Slingsby slut", the court heard.

Her barrister, Andrew Lidden, SC, said that, days later, the student was involved in a violent attack on three female pupils.

When the acting principal tried to intervene, the boy spat at her and tried to kick and trip her down a step.

He later kicked a school counsellor in the face, pushed her over a table and threatened her with a picture frame, the court was told.
